What to Do in a Boating Accident

While of course there are ways to improve your chances of avoiding accidents, sometimes it is impossible to account for everyone else in the water. If you can, take a boating safety course, know your vessel, and practice common sense and practice good judgment while out on the water. Because while accidents on a boat might happen less than car accidents, they can be more dangerous if you are out in the middle of the ocean when it occurs.

Here are the steps to take if you or your loved one gets involved in an accident

  • Gain your bearings! If anyone is in need of medical attention try to help them as much as you can.
  • Call the coastguard and report your coordinates, give the description of your boats, and list any injuries that anyone has suffered.
  • Ask for the other boater’s information.
  • Person’s name, address, and telephone number.
  • Name of all the passengers.
  • Names of all eyewitnesses
  • Name of all vessels.
  • Insurance policy number
  • Insurance company
  • Registration number of other boat.
  • After getting back to shore, file a boating accident report with the coastguard.
  • If necessary, file a report with your local parks and recreations department.
  • Like you would in a car accident, report the incident to your insurance representative. Tell them what happened, give them the reference number the coast guard will have given you, and include if any citations were written

Boating Accidents Explained

Boating can be one of the most relaxing and calming activities that you could ever think of. People go on boating trips to relieve themselves from the stress, pressure, and tension that they get from their everyday lives. It is true that boating could be a great means of relaxation as it could provide a different kind of environment and you’ll feel like you are closer to nature.

Some people like to celebrate an important event in a recreational, special, or luxury boat. And for most people, celebrations will never be complete without drinking alcoholic drinks. Though they don’t really intend to get totally drunk, this could still affect the way they think and this could result in different kinds of boating accidents especially if the one in charge of controlling the boat will also consume alcohol. He could hit another boat especially when they are in an area with other boats around or he could hit and cause damage to a property.
